Rugby at Culford
Rugby is a cornerstone of the sporting landscape at Culford. Culford’s Director of Rugby is Mark Bolton, Eastern Counties First XV Head Coach and 10 year professional Union and League player with international rugby experience. As the major game of the autumn term, the Rugby coaching programme is further enhanced by a strong partnership with Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club, giving additional specialised coaching and the opportunity for boys to continue their rugby development at the Club. The season begins with a residential pre-season training camp including at least one competitive match. A strong tradition of touring is well established and the 1st XV embark on national tours each year. From January, the focus is on 7s play where competitive fixtures are provided. Strength and conditioning is combined with skill development to ensure a high quality year-round rugby programme.
In 2016, Rugby at Culford enjoyed huge success. Culford School’s U18 Rugby 7s team won the Halliford School Floodlit 7s event held at London Irish’s Hazelwood Centre. Culford’s 1st XI Rugby team competed in the Greene King IPA Rugby 7s Tournament at Bury St Edmunds RUFC, alongside top-flight premiership teams.
