Season signed off in style!
By Simon Lord
Despite a brave second half, The Wild Geese wings were clipped by a Wolfpack wanting to entertain their home support.
Bury strolled to victory with a 9 try demolition of London Irish.
The Haberden this year, has not been the fortress of recent seasons, but a bumper home crowd saw Bury sign off with a much needed win. For the relegated Wild Geese, the season cant end soon enough but to their credit after a horror first half they dug in well before succumbing in the closing minutes.
Bury romped to a 36 – 0 half time lead courtesy of 6 tries, 3 of which were converted by Ben Leng. Although the Irish proved a handful in the scrum, when the game opened up, Bury were far too quick and powerful for the beleaguered Irish.
Will Scholes opened the scoring after just 2 minutes, strolling in after Bury had soon opened up a haphazard defence. Kohler’s arcing run and deft off load sent Wiltshire in 7 minutes later before Sharp scored Bury’s third try on 16 minutes side stepping his way over.
Tries continued to flow throughout the half, local lads Grey, Watson and Roper all scoring but If anything Bury ought to have added to their tally but over elaboration and some needless kicks cost them the chance of further scores.
The second period was a much quieter affair with the Geese coming out in determined fashion to slow the game down and make a fist of it.
For a Bury it has been a season of what might have been, and the promise of things to come. That future might be in youth and the home crowd were delighted to see scores for home grown players Forrest and Roper.
After 20 minutes of inactivity, Two late scores saw Bury make the half century whilst O Dell’s crashing run notched up a deserved score for the visitors
