Bury Wolves 30 V Shelford 3rds 19
Wolves win Super Premiere Cup Final in a thriller at Ely
Having lost to Shelford twice in the league this season the young Wolves knew they were in for a tough Super Premiere Cup Final on Saturday at Ely. However, in very wet and windy conditions the young Wolves came of age in a very hard fought final. With emerging players such as Sayer, Duchesne, Fox, Winters, Briggs, Branfield, Stuteley and Gilbert showing great promise for the future.
For most of the first half the Wolves were pinned back in their half as Shelford threw attack after attack at them. But for two lapses in defence which gave Shelford two well worked tries the Wolves defence held firm.
Wolves fly half Briggs showed great maturity and composure to drop a goal and kick a penalty to see the Wolves go into half time at 6 V 12.
After some honest words, from captain Oxborough, at half time the Wolves took the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half by storm scoring 3 tries.
The first came from number 8 stalwart Young. Who picked up from a strike against the head to drive over from close range. Fly half Briggs kicked the conversion.
The Wolves second converted try gave fly half Briggs his full house for the day as he benefited from some fast ruck ball from his forwards and the impressive Duchesne at scrum half.
After Briggs had kicked his 2nd penalty of the game the Wolves scored their final try of the game. The hard running of young wing Foxcroft saw him break through the Shelford line and then feed Branfield to score the cup winning try.
For the last 10 minutes the Wolves had to again dig deep and defend against a never say die Shelford side. It was the turn of the more experienced players such as Johnson, Oxborough, Giddy, Lagudi, Turner, Young and Hart to lead by example and close the game out.
