At last a flat pitch!
By Steve Newman
Team determination brought the result deserved in the end. Well done!
A good day for rugby, overcast and dry, Bury started strongly setting out their stall in the first minutes with a score after 3 mins by Harvey supporting the line break (Conv. Ben Dean) 7-0. What seemed to be no time at all Will Cooke broke through to add another try, (Conv. missed) 12-0. Bury then seemed to nip out for the restart allowing Sudbury to collect the bouncing ball camp on Bury's line and score their first try of the day, leaving the supporters scratching their heads 12-5. They had words behind the posts and immediately hit back with runners punching up the middle breaking the line and the support runners showing their team skills inter-passing for Craig Newcombe to finish off the attack (Conv. Ben Dean) 19-5. With both sides blowing a little after an intense 20 mins the game settled with Sudbury and Bury pushing hard but no breaching each others line. With ten mins to go in the half, missed tackles from Sudbury and strong running from Bury's players allowed another attack to be complete by Craig Newcombe (Conv. Ben Dean) 26-5. Again from the restart Sudbury pressed Bury's line using their forwards to make the platform to score from wide and run in under the posts, making the half time score 26-12.
The Second half started with Sudbury on the attack pushing hard to score after 5 mins in the corner 26-19. Bury fought back and more hard work and good hands saw Joe Berry run in after 10 mins for Bury's first second half score (Conv. missed) 31-19. From the restart Sudbury collected the kick that Bury seemed not to want and pushed hard to make ground ending in a quick score out wide to bring the score to 31-24. The middle of the half so much play in the middle of the park until Tommy broke through and stepping and turning the defence each way ran in for an outstanding try (Conv. Ben Dean-30 mins) 37-24. Even though Sudbury never gave up, Bury looked to gain control at this point and battered their way towards Sudbury's try line and their strong defence, and with what turned out to be the last play of the game the final pass to Jonno who sprinted past his opposite number to complete the scoring (Conv. missed).
Final score: 43-24.
