Beautiful day, warm weather and two very eager teams!
Bury arrived early enough to enjoy the warm day and lush grass of our hosts Ipswich. Playing the second team for the first time this season meant upping their game, and to the gathered onlookers that is what happened.
Right from the start both sides looked to mean business, Ipswich were the less quiet of the sides more so after the first few flurries of action, which to their consternation left them unable to break Bury's line of defence, and as their frustration grew so did mistakes, all forced by the pressure from Bury. But for the finishing touches from both sides this would have been a fairly high scoring affair, but the final passes didn't quite make it. Because of the intensity of the game when the first score came from Ipswich ti seemed they had been playing a lot longer than the 32 mins passed 5-0 Ipswich. The next 8 mins saw Bury pressure Ipswich into mistake after mistake and with tempers nearly at boiling Ipswich's No.7 was given 10 mins in the bin for a yellow card offence. Bury took advantage and drove attack after attack until they were under the posts for a scrum, which by now was so dominant they seemed assured of a certain try, after the first big push Ipswich's scrum broke up and a try or penalty try seemed the only outcome, unfortunately in the disarray the ref was unsighted as the ball was grounded and Ipswich got away untouched. 5-0 half time
The second half started with a bang for Ipswich as they attacked their KO, winning the ball back and passing to their wing, who broke through looking as if no one could stop him, a last ditch tackle seemed to have saved teh day only fro their captain to follow up and just make the line for another unconverted try. 10-0. From there on the game was played at spectacular pace only stopping for injuries one to Fly half Jonno who had to leave the pitch, and Centre Joe who was rolled in the tackle but luckily didn't sustain an injury. Bury forced the pace and play and pushed right into the left hand corner where eventually they were awarded a scrum about 5 metres out. Bury still very much dominant in the scrum ehld and pushed with Ipswich wheeling again, this time to their complete disadvantage, scrum half Ryu picked up and scampered to the line for Bury's first score, conv by Mike 10-7. With 15 mins to go Bury fought to overtake Ipswich's advantage so many times nearly making it, Ipswich held strong and were quick to punish any drop ball. With only a minute to go Bury had a line out on Ipswich the 5m line , they caught uncontested and looked set to drive over for the winning try, however it was blown as not straight and the final whistle followed immediately.
Final score: 10-7
