Expecting giants we were not disappointed, strength in numbers
By Steve Newman
Team game, team effort, it took a lot to overcome a team unbeaten in 13 games
With the forwards keeping the continual forward onslaught at bay, the Bury backs stretched their legs at every opportunity to provide a sting in the tail for Hadleigh's fine league campaign.
Hadleigh started strongly, their game plan was simple, bashed your way up the park, get within range and spin out to Merlin to weave his magic, however Bury's defensive wall made sure that all but one attack was snuffed out, and once they had turned over possession they made hay and then some! Incisive with most attacks Bury went forward and took nearly every opportunity, always putting Hadleigh on the back foot. After the first sustained attack in Hadleigh's 22 Bury having made many yards finished off the hard work with a try out wide, run in at speed by Werner, conv missed, 5-0. Still fresh both sides tried but were repelled until from a Bury scrum 15m out Ryu scampered into make it 10-0 conv missed. Bury maintained their composure and made their way to the Hadleigh line this time a short ball to Sean was off-loaded to Sam who gladly drove over for a converted try (Aaron conv'd). Having almost gone into shock 17-0 down after 28 mins Hadleigh rallied from the re-start and went back and tried to break down Bury's defence although under the cosh were very pleased to hear the half-time whistle.
The second half started at a pace Bury printing up the middle from the kick-off 4 or 5 phases later the ball reached Harvey out in the centres who once past the first tackler out-sprinted the defence to score out wide, conv Werner, 24-0 Bury on the score sheet again after only 80 seconds! 6 mins later Aaron sped over in the corner at the end of a finishing pass for another converted try, 31-0. 4 mins later from a Bury line-out, a very young looking Eddie added to the score with another try, conv missed, Bury now lead 36-0. A combination of a sharp intake of breath and Hadleigh stepped up the pace and determinedly kept banging against Bury's defensive wall. There was no score until Bury regained possession in their own 22 drove out and quick pass out to Connor who broke the first tackle to make the break and with one man to beat passed inside to Aaron who broke a despairing tackle and went over under the posts on 36mins, and converted it, take Bury out of reach at 43-0, the last four minutes saw Hadleigh camped in the Bury half, and almost inevitably the well-drilled Hadleigh pack battered their away at the Bury line to be rewarded with a try in the dying minutes of a great game of rugby, although the score was little reward for all their efforts.
Thanks to ref. Sean Simons keeping both sides honest so we could all enjoy the rugby.
