A much closer game than the score implies
One of our Trys disallowed and one of their Trys held up (but still given)...
Bury kicked off at 12:01 on a bright but overcast day.
Colchester immediately break through, down the right wing and dodge past Joseph but are brought down just 10m from the Bury try line. Bury manage to push back to the half way line but Colchester break through again and are only stopped by the continuous tackling from Joseph, George and Ben.
However, Colchester keep the pressure on in the Bury 20m area and eventually break through on far right wing and score near the corner flag. Their kicker made a great conversion and left the score (7-0).
With renewed confidence, Bury push down the field to within 10m of the Colchester try line and are awarded a penalty which allows them to drive closer to the try line. Bury are awarded a penalty and Colchester suffer a yellow card after an incident in a ruck just 5m from the Colchester try line. Bury win a scrum in front of the Colchester posts and pass the ball down the line to the left wing, where Declan scrambles the ball over the line to score (his 1st this season). The distance, angle and wind go against Maxx’s conversion attempt leaving the score at (7-5).
Colchester drive up the field and are soon on the Bury 5m line where they are awarded a scrum, which they win and pass down the line to their left winger who grounds it beside the corner flag, leaving an impossible attempt for their kicker (12-5).
Play is kept in the centre of the field until Bury manage to break through and make it within 5m of the Colchester try line before a scrum is given. Bury win the scrum and Maxx dives through the Colchester defence and grounds the ball although a ruck has formed and Colchester claim the ball was kept off the ground so the referee doesn’t award the try.
Half-time score 12–5 to Colchester
Colchester kick off and push Bury back to their 5m line where a scrum is awarded. Bury win the scrum but fumble the ball, which Colchester intercept and score on the far left, but miss the conversion (17-5).
Bury’s kick goes backwards so a scrum on the centre line restarts the game. Colchester push down the pitch again and break out to the left wing and their back manages to get across the Bury try line but the ball is visibly held off the ground by GeorgeA, however is blocked from the referee’s view and the try is given. Colchester miss the conversion leaving the score at (22-5).
Bury break through the Colchester forwards and get within 10m of the Colchester posts, but loose possession and Colchester kick clear to touch. Bury keep the pressure on Colchester and regain the ground lost, back to the Colchester 5m line. JoshH breaks through and scores (his 4th this season) between the posts leaving Maxx with a fairly easy conversion (his 8th this season) (22-12).
Play resumes but neither team can break out of the centre of the pitch, try as they might going from side to side of the pitch. GeorgeA makes a brave run down the right wing, before the referee brings the game back to the centre.
In the dying minutes of the match, Bury’s constant pressure forces Colchester back to defend their line and LouisG manages to break through grounding the ball on the far right wing to score (his 2nd this season) but as Maxx is in the dug-out Louis takes his own conversion but falls short (22-17).
Final score 22 – 17 to Colchester.
