Match abandoned 10 mins from final time due to severe weather
Both sides lost 2 players to injuries influenced by the severe driving rain and slippery conditions
After a 2 minutes silence (as it's 11am on Sunday 12th Nov 2017) (Remembrance Sunday), Bury kicked off at 11:00 on a bitter cold overcast day.
After a lineout on the left wing Bury were pushed back to their 22m where after a scrum, Lowestoft were awarded a penalty and decided on kicking for the posts, however even with the wind behind them missed the conversion.
Bury push back to Lowestoft’s 22m with an up and over kick from Maxx. Lowestoft kick clear and play regains on the ½ way line. Lowestoft continue the pressure and push Bury right back to their 5m line. Bury regain possession and run it back to the halfway and Peter kicks over the Lowestoft team deep into their half with Will and Robin chasing it down.
Bury wins a lineout and Cameron makes a mighty throw across to Maxx who passes it down the line but Lowestoft regain possession and bring play back to the halfway line.
Bury drive through the Lowestoft pack and kick over their backs with Ollie and BenS chasing. BenS is sideswiped by a Lowestoft player crossing the field, sending him flying, however Ollie recaptures the ball and grounds it left of the posts to score (his 1st try this season). Maxx’s brave conversion attempt was into the strong wind which deflected his kick way from the posts. (0-5)
Lowestoft kick off in the fine drizzle and push down to Burys 10m line. Lowestoft are awarded a penalty and Maxx is Yellow carded for kicking the ball away to foil Lowestoft from taking a quick penalty. Bury win the resulting scrum on their 5m line and kick clear however the strong, rain filled wind brings the ball back down by the Bury 10m line a yard from the touchline, and BenS catches it but is immediately taken out by a Lowestoft forward. Lowestoft win the lineout and one of their forwards dashes for the Bury try line but is intercepted by TommyW and both players are left dazed on the field after their impact, but the ball is out of play.
The rain is now pouring down as the spectator’s umbrellas prove. In the dying minutes of the 1st half and only 10m from the Bury try line, Will wins the lineout and throws it out of play, however unknown to him that doesn’t end the last play as it needs to be kicked out of play, not thrown out.
Lowestoft win the resulting lineout and pass down their line (taking out GeorgeM) before pushing over the Bury try line between the posts for an easy conversion. (7-5) at half-time.
The whole Bury squad try and take refuge from the biting, rain soaked wind in the small pitch side dugout hut on the far of the pitch, but can’t all fit in so sprint across the pitch into the changing room to warm up.
Lowestoft kick off at 11:45 and Bury immediately push down the field, surprising Lowestoft and put them on the defence in the driving rain with the wind now against them. Bury break through and Declan grounds the ball to score (his 2nd this season) near the right post. As Maxx is still off the field, Will takes the dropkick conversion and scores perfectly (his 1st this season) (7-12).
Lowestoft kick off into the driving wind and rain and play is kept in the centre of the pitch with several mistakes on both sides due to the slippery surface and ball. Both sides have to substitute players for minor injuries sustained in the worsening conditions.
BenS makes a break down the left wing and LouisD continues the run avoiding the Lowestoft defence, and manages to get over their try line and score (his 1st this season). The wind is so strong it completely deflects Maxx’s conversion attempt. (7-17).
A renewed Lowestoft drive down the pitch before they are taken out by Bury on the side line just 10m from the Bury tryline. Lowestoft win the lineout and drive over the line then run between the posts to score. (14-17).
With the wind and driving rain behind them, Bury kickoff and push down the field getting to the Lowestoft 5m line. Bury are awarded a scrum and win possession and Ollie drives over the line between the posts to score (his 2nd this season). (14-22)
At 12:10, before the conversion could be taken the Lowestoft coach suggests that the game should be abandoned and the referee and Bury coach agree. The bitterly cold, driving rain is coming straight off the North sea and more and more players were slipping over and losing their grip of the ball making play virtually impossible.
Final score 14 – 22 to Bury
