Bury St Edmunds U16s v Shelford in Eastern Counties Cup Win
Bury St Edmunds U16s finish the season with a well deserved 26 -0 win away to Shelford to claim the Eastern counties Cup.
Following Bury U16s winning of the Suffolk Cup last week they faced Shelford from Cambridgeshire in the final of the Eastern counties Cup.
Playing away at Shelford on the 4G pitch in dramatically colder weather than the sun of last Sunday, Bury took an early lead with a try from Jack North taking several of the opposition down to the try line with him. Jack Bowyer converted in windy conditions.
Bury then defended hard against a strong return attack from Shelford but were rewarded with a try from Paddy Mountford. Bowyer converted again taking Bury 14 - 0 into the lead.
Shelford again took the competition deep into Bury's half where strong pushes from Joel Clifford, Valentin Moraru, Cammeron Branagh and a lightning run from Mikey Watson made ground back into Shelford territory. Jack North was rewarded with his 2nd try leaving Shelford players in his wake giving Jack Bowyer his third convertion from directly in front of the posts taking Bury 21-0 in the lead at half time.
The second half saw Bury having to defend heavily with massive efforts from Jack Prior, Fergus Vickery and the Forward of the match Zak Brook and back of the Match Jack Bowyer preventing their advance. Max Harding made the only try of the second half in the corner after being edged just into touch minutes earlier at the point to give Bury another 5 points. Jack North had to come off with an ankle injury five minutes before the final whistle when the game ended 26-0.
David Mountford the teams head coach said this was a fantastic culmination to not only this season but 10 years of coaching the lad from the mini through their youth rugby to this point. Salva Palomares, Burys's new first team international signing who will be coaching the lads in the Junior Academy next season, said he hoped some of the lads would be playing alongside him in the first team in the near future!
