Eastern Counties Under 13 Competition – Sunday 11th November 2018, Colchester RFC
By Laura Hudson
A large Bury squad of almost 40 travelled to Colchester Rugby Club on a windy but pleasant autumnal day for the first in a series of regional competitions.
Conditions under foot were a little damp after the previous day’s heavy rain, but both Bury teams put on some excellent running rugby and good all round performances.
The Gold team drew their opening match, sharing 4 tries against Colchester, before going down 5 tries to 1 against both Woodbridge and Ipswich. They saved their best performance for last, beating Harwich 5-1 and can be proud of their day’s work. All of the boys played well, with some dogged determination in defence and some well worked tries. Isaiah Ortiz is fast developing into one of the hardest tacklers in Suffolk and it was good to see an excellent performance from Freddie Dean as he continues his promising return from serious injury.
The Green team beat Southwold 5 tries to 0, Colchester 4-0, Ipswich 3-1 and Sudbury 5-1. Tries came from Nico Marchini (7), Vincent La Starza (2) and then one apiece for Jaspar Dawson, george howard, Tom Cornwall, Luke neal, Jack Griggs, Ethan Swan, Ben Hewett and Finlay Blair. Every single player contributed a huge amount to a very promising set of performances and the game control, defensive commitment and offensive imagination bodes well for the second leg of the competition in early January.
All the players can be well pleased with their afternoon - the coaches were certainly very happy. If this level of commitment and skill can be carried into training sessions and future matches then a very formidable Bury youth side will continue to grow.
