U13s away to Ipswich RFC
Bury took a strong team over to Humber Doucy Lane to face an Ipswich team in good form.
Weather conditions were good for running rugby, but more importantly the temperature was approaching 10 deg C, meaning coaches and parents weren’t too cold for this time of year.
Bury played the first 20 minute third up the slight hill, but put Ipswich under immediate pressure. This pressure only increased as the match progressed, with a team-wide dedication to tackling and preventing Ipswich leaving their own 22. The opening try after 5 minutes came from captain Ben Hewett, who played very well all match, after the incessant pressure told. Two further tries were added in the first period by Vincent La Starza, who then completed his 15 minute hat trick at the start of the second period with some very strong running.
Playing down the slope suited Bury as four more tries were added in the middle period. Billy Reid scored a lovely try in the corner - described as “England quality” (admittedly by Billy himself), and then Nico Marchini and Jaspar Dawson both expertly finished off flowing passing moves. Vincent La Starza was there again to complete a strong session after a typically bullish run from Ethan Swan.
The final period started with another strong run from Ethan Swan, with Jack Griggs on hand to drive over and score. Nico Marchini added two more tries after quick thinking by Henry Hitt, and then Ben Nevison-Grainger completed the scoring with a great run after a solid scrum.
Overall the coaches couldn’t have been more impressed by the performance and effort today. The players all stuck together and the commitment was probably best exemplified by the desperate sprinting defence to prevent a last minute Ipswich try. Set piece and rucking play still needs further work, but the Bury team continues to grow and develop into an excellent all round squad.
