Bury St Edmunds under 13s v. Shelford - Sunday 20th January 2018, Shelford RFC
By Laura Hudson
Bury scored 25 tries on a successful trip to Shelford Rugby Club.
With temperatures dipping below freezing and the sun taking it’s time to break through the early morning mist, Bury travelled to Shelford Rugby Club looking to continue their fine recent form. The matches could only proceed thanks to Shelford’s excellent 3G artificial pitch, and Bury made the most of the perfect playing surface to once again score plenty of good tries and perform well across both teams.
Two mixed matches were played concurrently, making it difficult for parents (and more importantly match report writers) to watch all of the action. As the sun finally made an appearance and temperatures crept into positive figures both Bury teams made a mockery of the cold and early start to come flying out of the blocks. Five quick tries were scored, including a three minute hat-trick for Vincent La Starza and a good finish from Will Hudson-White after a well-worked driving maul.
There was also a first half hat-trick for Nicolo Marchini, showing some excellent, jinking running and quick feet, along with some impressive team tries expertly finished off by the ever alert Tom Cornwall, Freddie Dean, Jaspar Dawson and Finn O’Donnell. Not to be equalled, Vincent La Starza found space for another first half hat-trick, slowing down to take 11 minutes this time. Half-time scores of 5-1 and 9-2 showed the commitment across both teams and also the excellent defensive work.
In the second half, both sides continued to play their part in two entertaining matches, with Bury’s dominance at the set-piece allowing their greater cutting edge to come to the fore. The scrum worked well all morning and communication across the backline continues to improve. The final scores of 11-3 and 14-3 do not really tell the whole story – there were passages of play when Bury had to show true commitment and determination in defence, with superb tackling from Toby Coogan, Jack Griggs, Luke neal and Billy Reid to name just a few.
On a day when the Shelford defence simply could not handle his raw pace and power, Vincent La Starza finished up with 8 tries, followed by his compatriot Nicolo Marchini who scored 5. Jaspar Dawson and Luke neal scored 2 each, whilst Tom Cornwall, Freddie Dean, Henry Hitt, george howard, Will Hudson-White, Finn O’Donnell, Ethan Swan and Kai Tan all chipped in with one apiece.
Many thanks as always to the wonderful parents who offer support and encouragement whatever the weather and thanks to Shelford Rugby Club for hosting us so well. As the season progresses it will be vital to stress the importance of keeping the team grounded and humble, whilst also extolling their many strengths and making the most of the sheer enthusiasm and commitment they show to the wonderful game of rugby. With regular attendance and concentration at training there is no reason why this fine young team cannot continue to go from strength to strength.
