On a bitterly cold and windy day Bury got pretty heavily beaten but stuck to the task well - never giving up.
Playing against a very strong wind in the first half we were a try down almost straight from the kick off - Sudbury's kick-off giving them good territory - one turnover later and they were 1-0 up.
If we learn nothing else today it should be that when playing into a stiff breeze it's probably better to elect to take the kick off rather than let the other side kick you deep back into your half again - but that's what we did a few too many times - yielding massive amounts of territory each time - and against a strong passing side showing good skills at the breakdown and with some very big fast backs we found ourselves 7-0 down at half time - with most of the action happening in our half. The one bit of respite for Bury came from Kai breaking through several half tackles superbly, running more or less the length of the field, looking certain to score but being caught as he eased down just before the try line!
Kicking off the second half with the wind behind us things started to look up - with the team starting to play more like we know they can, stringing together some good movements and retaining possession. From a tap penalty 10m out, Isaiah barged his way through 4 or 5 defenders to score our first to make it 7-1 - only for Sudbury to come straight back from the kick off again through some less than convincing tackling. Kai then popped up with two more stunning runs - the first of which virtually from Bury's own line to score at the other end - then another one from the halfway - each time bursting through several tacklers and this time not stepping off the gas before touchdown!
That was the sum total of our scoring for the morning though - and the game finished 12-3 which was a fair result overall.
Although the Bury boys never gave up and showed some good individual skills
- we weren't quite as good as a well-drilled Sudbury side. Things to work on
- first time tackling, losing the ball in contact (Sudbury were particularly good at stealing the ball from us at the breakdown) - and passing at speed since we never really managed to get the ball wide very often - but also a lot to be very proud of - particularly the determination and fitness - the boys never gave up.
