FOXES V Lakenham Hewitt 16/9/18

The foxes travelled away to Lakenham with intent to put down an early marker for this season and did not disappoint.

The foxes arrived with a pacey back line up and a strong pack which despite several players moving to new positions were more than capable of driving the opposition of the ball when called upon.

The game began at a frantic pace with the foxes pouncing upon every loose ball , quickly recycling ball and and using the backs to full advantage with try’s early on for debutants Robyn and Em within the first 7 minutes of the game. Both converted by Danni (14-0)

Lakenham were then able to hold a period of good possession but were knocked back time and time again by Foxes defence with some crunching tackles from Danni, Nat and EJ in particular. This defensive pressure eventually lead to a long clearance kick by Lakenham which was caught on the bounce by Fullback Steph D who sprinted from within her own half to open her try account for the season. (19-0)

From the kick off the ball was quickly passed to EJ who ran straight up the midfield and was eventually hauled down on the edge of the Lakenham 22. The ball was quickly recycled out to Robyn who unselfishly popped the ball up to Steph D just a couple of meters from the line allowing her to score unopposed. (24-0)

Lakenham again rallied and mounted a series of attacks around the fringes however were thwarted by low tackles from Dee , Alex and Chloe who were playing well as a front row unit. Eventually the ball was turned over and picked up by EJ who made a run from halfway, she went over to score under the posts. Con Danni (31-0)

Following a scrum on the halfway line the ball was passed out to centre Danni through the narrowest of gaps leaving her to sprint free and unopposed to score under the posts and convert her own try. (46-0)

The next try came shortly after the restart which was gathered by Lakenham. However due to handling errors the ball was quickly turned over by Abz who vacuumed up the loose ball from the deck, acts seen throughout the game with little concern for her own safety. This was then recycled and spread out to Elina on her debut who executed a lovely inside ball to Robyn to gallop free under the posts leaving an easy conversion for Danni and bringing the score to (53-0)

Lakenham did not give up and for the final part of the first half camped themselves in the Foxes 22 mounting several waves of attack until they were eventually penalised at the breakdown following more strong defence from the Foxes who were determined not to concede. Danni stepped up for a clearance kick and Lakenham were undone by a lucky bounce as the bounced infield, into the path of Steph D who was left to run up the wing, achieving her hat-trick just prior to the half time whistle. (60 -0)

The Foxes started the second half much in the same vein as the first with a quick try by Holly following more good work at the break down. (Con Danni 67-0)

Lakenham were spurred on by this try and went on the attack, with their forward pack keeping possession for long periods. Each wave repelled by the Foxes forwards, with Flo in particular hitting back the larger attackers with some strong tackles. The ball was eventually spilled into touch and following a Foxes lineout was passed to Robyn on the wing who executed a cleaver switch move to Danni who scored out wide. (72-0)

Foxes are set to receive once again. From the kick off the ball made its way to Flo who burst through a gap in the Lakenham defence. The ball was shipped out to Lucy K who was keen to show her pace on the wing and score a try of her own. (Con Danni 79-0)

A mixture of fatigue and lack of self-discipline by the Foxes began to creep into the game as Lakenham rallied and mounted their best spell of attack of the match, driving deep into the heart of the Foxes defence and remained firmly situated on the Foxes 5-meter line for several minutes. Although the foxes showed some good defence in this period. Eventually pressure told and Lakenham burst over the line for a well-deserved try showing that despite the score line they were still very much up for the fight. (79-5)

Foxes were clearly hurt by conceding this try and went on the attack from the resulting kick off with some hard direct attacking rugby with Abz and EJ both leaving opposition players stranded on the floor following some hard and direct running lines. Following some more hard work at the break downs from Steph H, Em and Dee the ball found its way into the hands of Lucy who goose stepped her way passed the opposition and over for her second try. (84-5)

From the restart some strong defensive work from another debutant Hev lead to a turn over leaving EJ to sprit free and whilst one on one with the full back showed a sublime one handed flick out of the back to Lucy to gain her hattrick and bring the match to its conclusion. (89 – 5)

The foxes players and coaches will be pleased with the score line and result of this match especially the performances of some of the newer members of the squad who stepped up to the mark and will be putting pressure on those not available for this match.

Lady of the match performances went to Em who impressed at second row despite this being her first match in the forwards and Steph D who lead well from the back throughout.

There were several stand out moments in this game and I’m sure this score line will have sent out a strong message to the other teams in the league that the Foxes are back and ready to fight for the title.

Next match is V Woodbridge at the Haberden on Sunday 30th September 2018.
