High Octane Encounter

Sunday 12th November 2017
Sudbury RUFC U15 19 v Bury St Edmunds RUFC U15 21

A minutes silence was impeccably observed by both teams as they gathered in unison to remember. Following, no quarter was given by either side as both teams played out an exhilarating game of rugby which ebbed and flowed throughout. From the outset it was evident that both teams were prepared to move the ball quickly and exploit any space provided. In the difficult conditions, both teams should be commended for their accuracy; however it was Bury who scored first following a quick penalty. Yet the lead didn’t last long and Sudbury responded with a try. Unperturbed the team responded with another try following great pressure and a well controlled kick through. Minutes later this was added to as strong running and excellent support play resulted in another score. Sudbury regrouped and confident, following recent significant wins against Ipswich YM and Diss, scored another try to leave the score 21-12 in Bury’s favour at half time.

Throughout the early exchanges of the second half both teams continued to play with determination, however neither team was able to add to the scoreboard. Excellent defence from the team was complimented by a number of opportunities to further extend the score, only to be thwarted at the last by determined Sudbury defence. With time running out, Sudbury managed to break free and score and convert another try, ensuring a tense finale. Both teams continued to push for the win and with seconds remaining Sudbury broke clear and looked likely to score, however a fantastic saving tackle forced the runner into touch and the final whistle was blown, leaving the score 21-19 to Bury.

Today all the team played with real determination, defensively the boys displayed excellent organisation and physicality, matching whatever Sudbury threw at them. In attack the running was determined and the passing was slick, releasing others into space, whilst the support play was significantly improved, especially for the third try. Those from the U14’s who stepped up to play today again flawlessly merged into the team, all contributed significantly and matched their elder counterparts. Throughout, Sudbury emphasised the fact that they are a formidable opponent who will undoubtedly regroup and achieve significant success throughout the season.
