Ely RUFC U16 14 v Bury St Edmunds RUFC U16 57
Fantastic Play in the Fens
Last season Ely had given us a lesson in strong running rugby and we were on the end of a sizeable defeat. Bright sunshine welcomed us to the Fens on this occasion, slightly depleted due to school trips and injury, particularly in the front row, yet determined to reverse last season's defeat.
From the outset it was clear that the team had maintained the momentum from last week. Strong running and quick, organised and aggressive defence ensured that the scoreboard was regularly added to as the team restricted Ely's influence in the game. Their strong runners were met quickly and chopped down, whilst the team fluently linked between forwards and backs, running phases and passing with precision to maximise ground gained. By half time, last season's defeat was a distant memory, Ely managing a solitary try, whilst we had accrued 26 points.
Following the restart, the second half took a similar pattern, continued pressure forcing turnovers and clinical finishing increasing the points margin. Everyone of the fifteen who played contributed to an excellent team performance, playing on the front foot and reducing Ely's ability to impact upon the game, even as the final whistle sounded the team was showing attacking intent, full of energy and confidence reflected by the 57-14 final score.
Whilst low on numbers today, passion, determination and a desire to work for each other was not lacking. How things have changed this season, results aside, everything practised has been taken onto the pitch and everyone has been repaid for all their hard work as a collective, sticking at it through the low times has seen the team flourish. Thanks to the support today from all the parents, you should be extremely proud of your sons, they are a credit to you and the club. Thanks also to Ely for hosting us, never did they give up, pushing until the final minute and deservedly scoring the last try. Additionally, a huge thank you to the ladies who produced the post match meal without access to full kitchen facilities, the cake was excellent!
Next week will see the team visit Diss.
