Bury St Edmunds U16 24 v Wymondham U16 36

A Game of Two Halves
On Sunday 16th we welcomed Wymondham to the Haberdan for the first fixture of the season. Previous encounters placed our guests as significant favourites entering into the game and following the initial 15 minutes it appeared that this pattern would not change. Wymondham quickly established a 17-0 advantage, exploiting mistakes and utilising the space out wide. Wymondham's fourth try finally sparked the team into life, good phases of play in the opposition half were finally rewarded with a try out wide which was converted on the stroke of half time, leaving the score 24-7 in Wymondham's favour.
Buoyed by the closing encounters of the first half, a rejuvenated Bury started the second half at pace, great running and support delivered two quick scores as the deficit was reduced to 24-17. A further try apiece ensured that Wymondham maintained their lead, however the score had closed to 29-24. As the game reached its conclusion the team pushed for the winning score, excellent passing created an opportunity out wide, however the final pass failed to go to hand and Wymondham capitalised, breaking away to score, securing a 36-24 win.
Whilst a defeat, the overall performance showed how far the team have progressed, previously unable to compete equally with Wymondham, this game could quite easily have gone either way. Both teams played with determination, power and skill, and all of the players should be proud of their contributions to a thoroughly entertaining encounter. Thanks to Wymondham for the game and we will look forward to the return encounter, as their coach commented, "It was a proper tough game!"
