Bury St Edmunds RUFC U16 47 v Southwold RUFC U16 5
By Kirk Bonas
Fast out of the blocks!
Last season had seen some excellent contests between the team and Southwold, most recent being a loss away at the end of the 2017/18 Season. Southwold, as previously, arrived with a physically strong and sizeable team and it was envisaged that this encounter would follow a similar pattern. However, from the kick off the team played with outstanding pace and accuracy, moving the ball quickly and effectively using the space to surge into an early lead. Carrying this momentum forward, Southwold struggled to cope with the intensity and further scores ensued. Defensively the team were well organised and aggressive, whilst in attack numerous phases were linked effectively to secure field position and produce scoring opportunities. At half-time the score was 40-0.
Unfortunately, for a number of reasons the second half did not live up to the first. Southwold,to their credit, worked exceptionally hard and reduced the number of opportunities available to the team. In addition they deservedly scored a well worked try to reduce the deficit. Poor decisions and a lack of structure, especially in attack in comparison to the first half also restricted the scoring, however a flowing move signified the final score of the match and a deserved win, 47-5.
Today again highlighted how far the team have progressed, both in attack and defence. Everyone involved today should be exceptionally pleased with their performance, even with significant rotation, players seamlessly linked together. Thanks to Southwold for travelling to play, they never gave up and their second half performance was admirable. Thanks to the support provided by the parents, excellent as always! Next week will see Ely RUFC visit the Haberdan and another keenly contested fixture is expected.
