7's Cup Winners!

Outstanding Rugby to Brighten a Miserable Day
As a culmination to the season the team travelled to Ipswich for the annual 7's tournament. Greeted by inclement weather the team braced itself to compete against a very strong line-up, including Braintree, Sudbury, Colchester and Ely in a round robin format.
First up was Braintree, who had shown themselves to be a formidable unit in a recent fixture. Initially the team struggled with the different format and the pace of the Braintree attack, falling two scores behind. However, as the first half progressed the deficit was reduced to one score and suddenly the team was in the ascendancy. Following the restart for the second half the lead for Braintree was quickly wiped out. Further scores from fluent, flowing rugby combined with excellent defence, keeping Braintree scoreless for the second period, secured a thoroughly deserved win.
Next up were Sudbury B, following a long break the team were sluggish from the outset and two quick scores ensured that it was always going to be an uphill task. Whilst the team worked tirelessly to get back into the game, reducing the deficit to one score, errors prevented the equalizing score. Although a set back the team had again played some excellent rugby and due the nature of the competition all was still to play for.
Ely were due to be our next opponents, however following a succession of injuries they were forced to withdraw from the competition. Therefore, Colchester who boasted a perfect record were up next, having comfortably dispatched both their initial opponents. Colchester, bolstered by the return of a number of key players, would always be a difficult ask and they were quickly out of the blocks, scoring two quick tries. Yet, again the team demonstrated real fighting spirit and edged their way back into the game, finishing the half trailing narrowly. Into the second half and the all round determination and skill produced by the team suppressed the Colchester attack and produced a number of unanswered scores to secure the win.
Entering into the last game against Sudbury A, everything was still to play for with three teams vying for first place. Initially the game ebbed and flowed as both teams traded scores, however moving into the second half the team slowly overpowered the opposition, finishing comfortable winners having played some ruthless 7's rugby.
Gathering at the command point, unaware of the final score, every member of the team waited nervously as the minor awards were announced, finally being rewarded for their patience as they were named in first place, overall cup winners! Throughout the day the team performed brilliantly in horrendous conditions, last week Eastern Counties success, this week 7's. A truly deserved pair of competition wins in a hugely memorable season which has seen the squad move on significantly.
Thanks to all those who supported throughout the event, braving the weather and providing support to all those involved.
