Cambridge RUFC U16 12 v Bury St Edmunds RUFC U16 12
By Kirk Bonas
Last season we faced Cambridge at the same stage of the Eastern Counties competitions and were on the receiving end of a drubbing. Therefore, today provided an opportunity for redemption, bolstered by a full squad and a series of impressive performances throughout the season.
From the outset it was clear that this encounter was significantly different to last year, with play flowing equally, both teams resolutely defending and attacking with pace. With halftime approaching, Cambridge capitalised upon the team handing over possession, effectively utilising the space to score under the posts, 7-0.
Revitalised following the break the team took to the pitch in search of their first points, however Cambridge pounced upon a set piece mistake close to the line and extended the score to 12-0. Previously this would have possibly seen heads drop, however drawing upon the unity and desire within the squad the team produced its best rugby of the game. Strong running and excellent continuity secured field position, and it was thoroughly merited when the team secured a well worked try, 12-5. Buoyed by the score the team continued to push Cambridge back with effective defence and having turned over the ball, excellent running, support, footwork and timing of the pass culminated in the try of the game under the posts which was duly converted, 12-12.
An outstanding game of rugby, which highlighted the progression of the team. Next up Holt, who last season also inflicted a finals day defeat upon the team.
