Holt RUFC U16 7 v Bury St Edmunds RUFC U16 48
By Kirk Bonas
As with Cambridge, our Norfolk counterparts for the second year running were Holt who had secured the victory last season. Therefore another difficult contest was anticipated and following the opening exchanges, it was no surprise that the score was 7-5 to Holt, their strong forwards working hard in the close. However, unlike previously, this was to be their only score as the team put on one of, if not their best performance of the season to dominate the remaining scoring. Flowing rugby set up on the back of outstanding, go forward defence proved far too much for Holt as the team flourished, securing another 7 tries, 4 being converted, leaving the final score 48-7 and ensuring that the team would be crowned Eastern Counties Plate Champions! How things have changed in the course of a season!
Since minis, the road has not always been smooth for this squad, last season provided many low points, which most other squads wouldn't have coped with, yet from adversity has grown a hugely supportive and grounded group of players, not short in skill and with a real desire to play for each other. As someone commented, it's been fun, emotional, frustrating, inspirational and a pleasure to have been part of! Gritty, determined and truly the embodiment of what Bury St Edmunds RUFC is all about. Add to that the touring visit, support on match days and willingness to support other teams, a squad that has become a close knit group, developing as players, personalities and as fine young men. As a coaching group it has been a privilege and pleasure to be involved with the players, yet also the supportive parents who have also bought into the journey so passionately. Roll on next season, however first we have the end of season 7's and presentation evening! Awesome today, truly awesome!
