Old Albanians 38 v Bury St Edmunds 19
Wolfpack fail to howl in 1st league game of the season.
On a great day and a great surface, for running rugby that was expected to suit Bury’s style of play, it took the away team far to long to get into gear.
Against a team that Bury did the double against last season, the 1st thirty minutes of this game showed that things were going to be very different as Bury came up against a well drilled OA’s team under the tutorage of James Buckland.
OA’s were a team that had changed almost their entire squad during the close season, but that was not the picture that was seen on the day as they helped themselves to 6 tries at regular intervals throughout the 80 minutes.
Despite Bury’s larger pack, the OA’s physical set of forwards caused the Wolfpack several problems at key times and their back row in particular worked well, to secure possession that was used to great advantage.
OA’s forwards were not the only threat for the Wolfpack as OA’s new backline combinations and considerable pace, continually caused their opposite numbers problems.
Bury showed their defensive frailties on far too many occasions to be any real threat to OA’s but after a half time reality check, Bury did show signs of improvement however it was to little to late against an OA’s side that had set their stall out early in the game.
The OA’s No8 Oliver Stonham was a thorn in Bury’s side all afternoon and so many good things came from a player that defied his young age.
The last 30 minutes was a positive for Bury when the team showed what they were capable of. Winning and keeping possession with an increase in intensity and physicality leading to several excellent phases and a couple of late scores. The team showed that with a collective work rate, attitude and desire to win, they will be able to score tries and win games.
Bury will have several things to work on at training this week but there are plenty of games in this League to enable them to put things right.
