Match report by Christopher Walker
Bury kicked off into the wind and low sun and for the first 12 minutes both sides fought in the centre of the pitch with strong tackles leaving the spectators anticipating a tight game.
Royston then stepped up their game capitalising on every chance to brake through Bury’s defence, scoring four tries in a row. When the halftime whistle blew Royston were 33 -0 ahead of Bury.
Bury had a mountain to climb to get back into the game but with the wind on their side Bury got their first try from Ollie Templeton; clearly the half time talk a worked. At the second restart Royston attacked Bury’s try line, but Bury pulled back and soon scored again with Will Whitaker forcing through Roystons defence.
Bury did not give up and with Bailey Jarvis playing some fantastic rugby, threw a lovely lofted pass out to Max Harding who hit the gas and got Bury’s 3rd try.
Bury had to deal with some poor discipline from Royston, however team work prevailed with Ewan Sherrell braking through and taking what seemed like all of Royston’s defence over the try line.
With ten more minutes to play, Bury looked as if they could have taken the win but when the final whistle blew Royston found themselves the winning team.
Bury hadn’t given up and gave Royston one of the best games they have had this year finishing 45-24 to Royston.
We look forward to welcoming them to the Haberden soon.
